Prologue
You just know it’s going to be a bad day when a crime reporter crows, “Got ya!”
I flinched, and then I squeezed my eyes shut (like doing so would allow me to blink Jack Stern out of existence). This was probably not the professional choice for a semi-professional assassin to make. Some, namely the lizard curled up in my bra, would probably say it was childish.
After a long moment, my initial panic dissipated, and I opened one eye to look in the reporter’s direction. He was staring off in the opposite direction. His “Got ya!” hadn’t been directed at me. He hadn’t figured out that I’m a contract killer for the Delveccio mob family.
I let out a shaky sigh of relief. If he didn’t know what I’ve done, I didn’t have to eliminate him to keep my secrets. I didn’t want to have to kill Jack. I kind of like him. It’s just that sometimes I worry that our respective career paths have put us on a collision course only one of us can survive.
